General Job Responsibilities for Controls Engineer
As a Controls Engineer with PHD Technology Solutions, you will troubleshoot, install, improve, and assist in designing control systems for manufacturing equipment in industrial environments. Duties will include working individually and working with other team members. This is a salaried position. Travel may be required to fulfill some customer demands.
Base responsibilities of the Controls Engineering role include:
1. Development experience in one or more of the major brands of PLC and HMI (Rockwell, Siemens, GE Fanuc preferred). Ladder logic is a must.
2. Knowledge of industrial communications networks such as EthernetIP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, ProfiNet, Profibus, and Modbus.
3. Able to implement VFDs by specifying wiring, setting parameters, and commissioning.
4. Know how to test electrical systems using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure proper installation and operation of control systems. Able to diagnose malfunctioning systems and components using test equipment to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Able to inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. Request repair service as needed.
5. Able to design and conduct diagnostics to evaluate electrical systems and applications.
6. Able to plan layouts and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes. Able to read and create industrial electrical schematics for control systems.
7. Able to integrate OEM equipment by following manufacturers instructions and established procedures.
8. Able to advise management on whether or not continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
9. Perform business management duties such as maintaining records and files, preparing reports and ordering supplies and equipment.
10. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
11. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Additional useful abilities in the Controls Engineering role include:
1. Controls experience in additional PLC and HMIs brands and in additional industrial networks. Knowledge of other PLC programming languages.
2. Knowledge of how servo drive systems.
3. Can perform instrument calibrations per standards and per customer requirements and requests.
4. Able to implement DCS systems.
5. Project management experience.
6. Database experience.
7. Web development experience.
8. Higher level programming languages.
