Description
The Social Media Specialist for the Maryland SPCA will be responsible for content creation, oversight, implementation and daily management of the organization’s social media marketing and communications initiatives. This position is responsible for implementing social media marketing campaigns; analyzing and reporting on social media analytics; researching internet trends; following best practices; and monitoring other non-profit and news media social media pages. This position will also be responsible for gathering information from medical and shelter staff and writing impactful pet stories; creating videos; taking pet, staff, volunteer and event photos for use on social media and for marketing and development purposes. The Social Media Specialist reports to the Director of Communications and will work with other directors, managers, staff members and volunteers.

Responsibilities:
Social Media: 75% of workload
• Researching social media best practices and implementing those practices to grow and engage the MD SPCA’s social media followers
• Monitoring the MD SPCA’s social media pages including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Yelp
• Willing to work towards expanding our social media presence into new platforms (Snapchat, Pinterest, etc.)
• Writing and posting timely and relevant information about programs, events and other shelter activities on all of the MD SPCA’s social media pages including strategically utilizing Facebook Live
• Monitoring social media pages of other shelters, similar organizations and the news media
• Managing and monitoring the MD SPCA’s online community, responding professionally to comments on MD SPCA’s social media pages
• Providing support to MD SPCA clients via social media and Yelp
• Creating infographics and editing photos for use on social media sites
• Gathering and reporting on social media analytics

Writing: 10% of workload
• Working with vet/kennel staff to learn about pets and writing compelling stories used in development materials, newsletters, e-news and on social media sites
• Writing pet descriptions of adoptable pets for use on website and social media

Videography: 5% of workload
• Creating videos of shelter pets, volunteers and staff members
• Uploading videos to YouTube and sharing on social media platforms

Photography: 5% of workload
• Photographing pets used for social media and marketing purposes
• Photographing staff, volunteers, adopters and donors
• Attending and taking photos at events to be edited and uploaded to Facebook

Other: 5% of workload
• Adding pages to the MD SPCA’s website including the Upcoming Events and What’s New sections
• Designing flyers for shelter events for use on social media and the website under the direction of the Marketing and Graphic Design Specialist
• Managing MD SPCA internship program
• Working with Kennel/Behavior team member and data entry personnel to select pets for regularly scheduled TV appearances
• Working with Director of Communications to prepare for media interviews at the shelter

Qualifications:
• A four-year college degree
• Excellent writing skills including correct spelling, grammar and punctuation
• Proficient in social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat
• Experience in producing Live Facebook posts
• Photography and video production experience
• Graphic design experience
• Experience using Illustrator
• Experience using video editing programs (Movie Maker or comparable program)
• Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment and meet deadlines
• Demonstrated initiative and good judgment
• Reliable and detailed oriented
• Interest in animal welfare
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to work directly with animals
• Willingness to take photos of pets that come to the MD SPCA with physical injuries and illnesses
• Availability to work some weekends and evenings photographing events
• Commitment to and enthusiasm for the mission, program and services of the Maryland SPCA
• Able to perform other duties as needed

Preferred:
• Experience working in an animal shelter
• Website management experience
• HTML experience preferred
