The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner Manager. Reporting to the Vice Director Clinical Operations within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Manager, Orthopaedic Advanced Practice Providers (APP Manager) will provide operational oversite to Advanced Practitioners (30 APP staff). This includes managing exempt level staff, developing policies/procedures and quality assurance programs. This position is also responsible for administrative tasks involving Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner scheduling, training, credentialing, and evaluation.

Provides consistent management across Institutions, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University and across locations, in accordance with established policies and protocols. Currently, we have staff APP at Johns Hopkins Hospital, White Marsh, Greenspring Station, and National Capital Region, approximately 7 worksites. We provide a combination of Ambulatory and Inpatient services for both adults and pediatric patients.

The Manager will also function in the capacity of Clinical Provider as needed to provide leadership and cross coverage, periodically (20%). Evaluates patient's health status through diagnostic procedures and tests. Provide therapeutic patient care under direction of a physician and in accordance with established protocols. The Manager will attend Faculty and Operations meetings and collaborate with Leadership. The Manager will collaborate with the current NP Manager at Bayview who oversees approximately 14 additional APP staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Requests consultations with other departments, as necessary. Acts as liaison with Finance, Billing, Access Center and other Department stakeholders. Develops and establishes new workflow procedures and standards to improve efficiency and effectiveness within the Division. Development and coordination of clinic staffing and patient care schedules; manages all NP, PA and clinical support staff activities, including recruitment and hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, records and evaluation; responds to inquiries from patients/parents or refer to Leadership; oversees all credentialing and peer chart review activities. Monitors, approves and coordinates APP staff education and training, including CME, compliance and other. Advises faculty and staff about changes in applicable policies and procedures. Keeps abreast of regularly scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current APP knowledge of procedures and health care plans and protocols. Facilitates communication between own team and other overlapping divisions. Approves e210 time records. Coordinates location and workspace for all APP staff.

Establishes productivity standards and monitors performance. Maintains divisional database and bio sketches of all active and pending staff APP staff. Monitors financial information provided by Finance to ensure appropriate utilization of APP workforce to include patient care coverage, RVU targets and patient satisfaction metrics. Approves APP staff purchasing requests, maintenance, and divisional cell phones/pagers; Pre-approve reimbursements as necessary; reviews divisional computer equipment and tech support coordination.

Possible weekends; no telecommuting.

Advanced Practitioner (20%) Duties and Responsibilities:

Interview patients and compiles patient medical histories to assist in determination of health status. Perform physical examinations of patients, noting normal and abnormal findings. Obtain specimens from patients and runs routine laboratory tests and procedures; performs diagnostic tests, orders non-routine laboratory tests or procedures as required. Analyze and evaluates patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and makes preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physician. Develop care/treatment plan for patient according to established protocols and procedures; confers and consults with supervisory physician and other professionals before implementing treatment.

Perform procedures as required such as starting I.V. lines, applying plaster casts, traction and splints, assisting in placement of tubes, and suturing cuts and wounds. Prepare patient for surgery by shaving, scrubbing and draping surgical field following sterile techniques. Insert monitoring equipment such as urinary catheters and temperature probes. Assist physicians during surgical procedures. Write post-operative orders, which include laboratory tests, medications, and care plans according to established procedure and protocol, for review by physician. May attend medical rounds with physician or members of medical staff to monitor patient progress, and provide information to staff on patient's care plan, condition and progress of patient.

Provide education and guidance to patients and family members in maintaining good health, disease prevention and home care under supervision of a physician. Attends regularly scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures and health care plans and protocols. Attend outpatient clinics and assists with patient management. Facilitate communication between own team and other consulting medical services. Requests consultations with other departments, as necessary. Acts as liaison with other medical services (social work, rehabilitation medicine, etc.). Provide first or second assist in operating room, as required. Remove and/or reinforce sutures. Evaluate wounds, changes dressings and performs wound care.


Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Must be registered by the Board of Medical Examiners of Maryland. Three (3) years' experience in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Prefer at least 5 years related experience. Supervisory experience preferred. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical medicine. Work requires comprehensive understanding of patient care delivery systems. Computer knowledgeable and will be expected to fully utilize all Johns Hopkins systems.

Work requires the analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems, or design relatively complex systems and programs that cross department/division lines. The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations. Work requires individual to demonstrate team player and leadership skills to manage and develop all APP staff within the division. Extraordinary customer service skills. Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required.

Knowledge of medical terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Psychology, Pharmacology, Clinical Medicine, Radiology, Microbiology and Pathology as acquired through completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Advanced Practitioner work requires six-to-twelve month's on-the-job experience to have a comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols and testing procedures. Work requires analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan. Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients; instruct health care personnel on procedures and treatment.

Working Conditions:

Some exposure to contaminated materials, infectious specimens and communicable diseases, but potential for harm or personal injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Work requires mental and visual concentration up to fifty percent of work time during patient histories, physical examinations or surgical procedures.
