The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States and is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to join the MTA team.

The Maryland Department of Transportation's Maryland Transit Administration is recruiting for a Deputy Safety Officer. The Deputy Safety Officer serves as the key advisor to the Chief Safety Officer and assists with managing all of the administrative aspects of safety, quality assurance and risk management. The Deputy Safety Officer is responsible for reviewing the system safety functions set forth in the MTA System Safety Program Plan and for establishing measurable goals and objectives and adjusting resources to ensure that these goals and objectives are achieved within the specified time frames. The Deputy Safety Officer personally manages and supervises the Safety Section, the Environmental Compliance Branch, the Quality Assurance Branch and the Transit Insurance Group. It is the Deputy Safety Officer's responsibility to prepare and administer the operations, investigations, accident prevention, and fire life safety aspects of the MTA System Safety Program Plan. This includes performing accident/incident investigations, reviewing operating rules and procedures, conducting management oversight audits, inspecting and investigating as necessary to monitor the effectiveness of vehicle, passenger, employee and fire life safety requirements of the MTA System Safety Program Plan. Also, the Deputy Safety Officer must possess an in-depth knowledge of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Standards, National Fire Codes, and other National Consensus Standards, State and Local laws and regulations.


Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience interpreting, developing, implementing and ensuring the compliance of safety regulations within a bus, rail or industrial work environment. Two (2) years of the required experience must have involved the supervision of employees.

1. Additional experience in administrative or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university in the area of Occupational Safety or related field may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-to-year basis for the required experience.


Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
