The Department of Oncology is seeking a Senior Research Nurse to work collaboratively within a multi:disciplinary health care team. The Senior Research Nurse is responsible for the coordination and implementation of assigned clinical trials within the research program.Duties and Responsibilities: Project Management: Pre:study: Anticipates research requirements for designated GI Cancer and Immunology protocols in collaboration with research team. Determines that IRB approval received prior to initiation of research activity. Attends start up meetings for GI cancer and Immunology trials. With Program Managers, prepares space for study:related equipment and supplies as appropriate. Collaborates with protocol teams in completing external website lay abstracts.Recruitment and Enrollment: Meets with GI and Immunology candidates to educate/pre:screen as appropriate. Pre:screens potential research subjects for participation in GI and Immunology clinical trials (i.e. review of medical history, concomitant meds, pathology, other relevant documents). Serves as the center:wide contact for all providers regarding potential GI Cancer and Immunology candidates. Develops and maintains system to accurately reflect available GI Cancer and Immunology trial openings/patient candidates. Provides copy of protocol consent to potential candidates. Refers patients to appropriate trials; communicates candidate assignments to research study teams Initiates insurance clearance process for subjects. Assures appropriate staff members are aware of insurance denials and follows up on status of appeals, etc. Schedules patients for consenting and screening visits. In conjunction with PI/study team, monitors enrollment goals; collaborates in the development of recruitment strategies as needed. Organizes own time and sets priorities for research related functions. May assist with scheduling patients for clinical research visits. Maintain the study priority list.Quality Assurance: Assists with development of SOPA?s pertaining to clinical trials; knowledgeable about departmental SOPA?s. Evaluates outcomes of clinical trial system. Maintains and evaluates data regarding insurance denials and screen failures for each trial. Achieves and maintains a working knowledge of computer software specific to department, including word processing, e:mail and internet functionsmunication: Communicates effectively with subject and family of active and prospective study participants. Communicates effectively with members of the health care and research teams. Documents telephone and other communications with patients per institutional policy. Meets regularly with other members of the research team to review protocol progress and update on patterns discovered with insurance denials and screen failures. Attends and participates in meetings of the research nurse group/research teams. Collaborates with SKCCC Clinical Trials Information Specialist. Attains proficiency in Web:based communication.Education: Attends and participates in in:services and external training, workshops, conferences, and other relevant and/or required programs for professional growth and development. Participates in the orientation process for new Clinical Research Nurses. Coordinates and/or presents continuing education/in:services programs for Clinical Research Nurses, Data Managers and other members of the research team.Clinical Practice: Maintains yearly competencies per Cancer Center policy.
