Classified Title: Research Technologist Research Technologist- PREP ScholarLevel/Range: 02- CC Starting Salary Range: Commensurate with Experience Employee group: Full Time Employee subgroup: Non-Exempt Schedule (hours/days): Monday- Friday 8:30 AM - 5 PM Location: East Baltimore Campus General Summary/Purpose: The successful candidate will join a young laboratory developing and utilizing cutting-edge, high throughput genetic, genomic and computational technologies for the exploration of non-coding RNAs in neural cell fate decisions and developmental disorders. The technologist will support specific projects involving select high-throughput single cell genomic and transcriptomic assays. After training under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and laboratory supervisor (postdoc), the individual will be responsible for performing routine molecular biology assays in this research laboratory and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, inventory, equipment, and supplies. The candidate will also present summaries and quality assessments of data generated at regular intervals. The Post baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) Program at Johns Hopkins University combines research experience and education opportunities for candidates looking to advance to MD/PHD programs. Funding from NIH combines with JHU funding to support this program. Scholars are expected to perform typical research technologist duties while combining various projects for the PREP program completion. This position ends June 2019. Specific duties & responsibilities: Development and implementation of a novel research plan focused on characterization of single isolated mouse neurons. Develops and follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments. These will require basic tissue culture, and/or cell separation methods, and laboratory methods/techniques associated with genetics and molecular biology such as: high-throughput genotyping, Next-Generation sequencing library preparation, quantitative and qualitative analyses of nucleic acids, as well as other functional and enzymatic assays. Non-survival mouse surgery for tissue harvest and live-cell preparation. Development and adherence to protocols for single cell isolation, enrichment, and sequencing. Animal colony management and behavioral analysis in conjunction with collaborators and core facilities. Work with large datasets will be required, and strong computational skills are desired. Careful records of all experiments performed and assessment of quality of data generated is critical. This position will also prepare solutions and reagents, order materials and supplies, maintain sterile ready-to-use glassware, keep inventories of lab stocks, and maintain laboratory equipment. Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Requires BS/BA, or equivalent, in biology, chemistry or physics. Must have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies, and laboratory experience gained through class work: biology, biochemistry, computational biology, chemistry, physics, microbiology and/or genetics. Preferred qualifications: Formal coursework or laboratory experience in genetics or molecular biology techniques would be highly desirable. Additional relevant laboratory experience acquired through extracurricular activities is very desirable. Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: Candidates with programming experience or experience with linux systems and command-line utilities will be given special consideration. Any specific physical requirements for the job: Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction; Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm. Communication skills using the spoken word; Ability to see and hear within normal parameters; lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc. Ability to move about workspace.
