Classified title: Associate Staff Engineer Role/Level/Range: ACRP/04/MD Starting Salary Range: $50,956 - $70,095 Employee group: Full time Schedule: M-F 37.5 hours/week Employee subgroup: Exempt Location: Baltimore, MD Department name: Physics and Astronomy Personnel area: KSAS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Instrument Development Group (IDG), a service center in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University, is looking to hire a junior engineer to assist in the development of instrumentation for physics and astronomy research. The individual will largely be responsible for the design, integration and testing of instrument optical and mechanical hardware, with a lesser fraction of time being devoted to software development and analysis. Primary duties include the design of components using computer aided design (CAD) software, the development of engineering drawings suitable for manufacture, optical alignment and metrology using basic laboratory optical test equipment, assembly of optical and mechanical hardware, and carrying out test procedures. He/She will work under the supervision of senior mechanical, optical, and software engineers within the IDG. Some travel is required but is infrequent. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering or physics, be creative, have good lab skills and good communication skills. Experience with a computer aided design software package such as ProEngineer or SolidWorks is highly desirable. Experience with optical systems is also desirable. Candidates should be proficient in the use of personal computers and the use of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Candidates should also have some experience with a computer programming language, i.e. C++, Matlab, Visual Basic, or Python. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
