General summary/purpose: This position reports to the Manager of the Commercialization Strategy Group (CSG) within Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV). In this role, the Sr. Business Analyst supports the technology commercialization activities of JHTV by supporting the assignment of assessments of potential new technologies and devising plans to develop the technology to the point where it can be licensed to an established corporation or spun-out into a new start-up company.. Specific duties & responsibilities: Manages departmental relationship with the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) related to Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) and Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund. Writes translational funding applications in consultation with key stakeholders. Plans and organizes translational funding meetings involving coordination and participation of internal and external partners. Attends Institute for Clinical and Translational Research studio sessions and MII check in meetings. Maintains records for ATIP and MII funding and notifies applicable parties of funding awards. Maintains all translational research funding records in SalesForce. Prepares translational funding report for weekly pipeline meeting Develops standard operating procedures and navigational structure in SalesForce for improving accuracy and integrity of vital data. Prioritizes, organizes, plans and assigns analysis projects for himself or herself, as well as for the organization, and sets clear, realistic, time-bound and measurable goals. Monitors assignment progress, investigates possible roadblocks, and develops alternative methods for redirecting tasks to ensure objectives are met. Analyzes individual invention disclosures on new technologies and develops structured reports of their scope, stage of development, and how they fit into integrated intellectual property (IP) portfolios at JHTV. Consults with senior faculty and key partners, such as JHTV Mentors-in Residence and TEDCO site miners, to develop a better understanding of technologies, the direction of ongoing research, and integrate this information into the analysis of the technology. Identifies obligations incurred through funding sources, material transfer agreements and other agreements that may impact the ability of JHTV to license the technology. Analyzes the structure of IP landscapes to develop an understanding of important organizations and trends in specific industries. Maintains a deep understanding of certain key industries relevant to the commercialization of major IP portfolios managed by JHTV. Extracts potentially relevant prior art from the IP landscape to determine the ability to patent new technologies. Identifies markets that new technologies will integrate with, potential barriers to deploying the new technologies, and related licensing opportunities for JHTV. Based on analytical findings, provides recommendations to key decision makers for patenting and technology commercialization strategies, including whether the technology should be developed through a start-up company or licensed to an established corporation. Creates and maintains a library of analysis resources for use by the CSG team. Coaches and mentors interns in the JHTV Commercialization Academy (CA). Helps interview and select CA interns. Organizes inventions for review and manages the work product of the Technology Advisory Group committee meetings. Qualifications Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Bachelor's degree in a biological or engineering related science required. 2 years' experience in data-driven analysis or in a start-up company environment. Preferred qualifications: Advanced degree preferred, but not required, in a related science or a MBA with experience in biotechnology fields. Experience in computer programming and/or information theory preferred. Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: Able to understand complex technologies and develop concise, clear synopses of the technologies. Resourceful with data gathering, manipulation of large data sets, and quantitative analysis. Able to think creatively about potential commercial applications for new technologies and how JHTV might facilitate commercialization. Able to deal well with unstructured problems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Detail oriented and highly organized.
